Call and Return workshop at Dislocate

We spent 1-6pm on Saturday running a drop-in workshop for Call and Return as part of the Dislocate festival.

Having a leisurely 5 hours (compared to the 2 at hanare) and also having stocked up on small fluffy things at the local 100 yen shop that morning, we were able to allow people to choose an avatar for keeps and to get them signed up on Twitter straight away.

The remainder of our time was spent brainstorming possibilities for the creativity and cabaret orientation missions and also trying out different missions in and around the Zaim building.

Two avatars were hidden and, after clues had been posted on Twitter, other players set out to find them (also tweeting their progress as they went).

I really enjoyed the spontaneous creativity that was evident throughout this whole process – starting with the way characters were developed during the selection of backgrounds for the Twitter profile photos right through to how players determined what do do with the hidden avatars once they had found them.

A later mission that was based on one of the activities at hanare saw several players going out into the nearby streets and finding as many good places (as judged from their avatar’s perspective) as they could in 15 minutes. Again this resulted in some nice creative responses and also the involvement of some local dog-walkers!
